Extended life expectancy has introduced the need for the treatment or replacement of worn or broken body parts. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the aging dentition. Human teeth were designed to last about thirty to forty years: the life expectancy of our original ancestors. Even two generations ago, total tooth loss was the norm. Now we have the knowledge, skill, and technology to permanently restore and replace worn and broken dentition for a life time.

Full dental reconstruction (Mouth Reconstruction) is the term for this very sophisticated and demanding specialty of dentistry. It is best performed by a Prosthodontist, a dentist who has received years of additional training to treat severely broken down, worn or aged dentition.

Dr. William Harrison trained in and taught prosthodontics for over twenty years at UCLA School of Dentistry. Dr. Andrea Henderson is a board certified Prosthodontist from UCLA’s elite Prosthodontics program.

What is Reconstructive Dentistry?

Reconstructive dentistry as the name implies is the rehabilitation of severely compromised dentition. This includes teeth worn by age or aggressive grinding. Also, esthetically compromised teeth due to discoloration, crowding, traumatic injuries, etc. Missing teeth, removed because of extensive decay, periodontal disease, or trauma can be restored with implants, dentures, or bridges.

Even more extensive and sophisticated reconstruction includes patients whose jaws and teeth have been compromised due to cancer or genetic defects. While all dentists are licensed to treat these conditions, only dentists specially trained should attempt them.

Prosthodontics is the specialty specifically trained to treat these conditions. Dr. William Harrison was the first UCLA graduate to be invited to teach in UCLA’s prestigious Prosthodontic program. He instructed and taught in this program for over twenty years.

Dr. Andrea Henderson, and associate in our office is also an alumnus of UCLA’s prosthodontics program. Not only is she a board certified Prosthodontist, she is also a Maxillo-Facial Prosthodontist.
This means that she is specifically trained to treat all sophisticated rehabilitation cases.
